Doesn’t it seem that whenever you turn on the news or turn up to a social event everyone’s just always yammering about what they don’t like? Well, we like to talk about the things we do like as well! Here’s our top three modern novels to read for anyone wanting to write successful horror- and by horror, we don’t just mean a prescriptive genre, but any story that has a disturbing or fearful element to it, or an aspect that makes you experience the uncanny or unease.
The Road – Cormac McCarthy – It doesn’t get much more powerful than this. There are scenes in this book that grip you like many-limbed thing and won’t let go. In these pages you’ll find dread, despair, and of course, moments of transcendental humanity. It’ll make you weep like your heart’s been torn at the end.
Cujo – Stephen King – He had to be on the list somewhere, didn’t he? This relatively short and lesser acclaimed one by him makes the top above his other masterpieces simply because it tapped into a genuine childhood fear I had: that a beast was hiding in my closet. If you’ve ever been afraid of that don’t read this because it will shit you up for life.
Ellison also created an ingeniously devilish videogame to go with his story. The game’s as well written and mind-bogglingly horrifying as the original!
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream – Harlan Ellison – At first glance you might think this is a science fiction story. On second, you might think it’s a neurotic tale full of Freudian fears and twisted psychological landscapes. You’d be right on both accounts. But there’s a deeper, even darker horror breathing in Ellison’s work, and his true mastery is that it’s only suggested. He knows when to hold back, to suggest, to allude, and then he knows when to give you the full naked dagger of something truly awful. Every story in this collection will knock you for six guaranteed, but the title story is the killer.
